About Life's A Beach

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO ENSURE THAT YOUR STAY IS A GREAT ONE

Please confirm your booking by e-mailing us - we need to know your approximate arrival time, if you require any help getting here and also if you'd like to join us for the communal dinner on your first night.

Check in time is from midday. Check out time is 10am. We do need to ensure that the beds can be ready for the following guests so your help in vacating your bed on time is appreciated. You do not need to leave the premises at 10am - you are welcome to stay for the day.

Often people book with us for one night, only to be disappointed to find that we are fully booked the following day. Most of our guests stay, on average, for 3 – 4 days so please let us know in plenty of time if you would like to extend your initial booking.

We are Gavin and Steve. We first arrived in Bai Xep near the end of 2013 whilst travelling through South East Asia. We fell in love with the village and opened Life’s a Beach the following year. We never dreamed of running a place like Life’s a beach but we couldn’t contemplate leaving our new found paradise - we hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Our place is aimed at a certain kind of traveller. Our guests tend to be intrepid travellers looking for a special experience that is so rare today. If you are an adventurous soul who values meeting great people and having real experiences over resort style accommodation with formal service, you’ll fit right in. If not, you may want to rethink your booking. We provide a great environment and everything you could need for an amazing stay but you get out what you put in. There are so many unique opportunities to be had but you have to come with an open mind and be willing to go out and make them happen.

We are located in Bai Xep a small working fishing village 10km south of the city of Quy Nhon. As the city is off the tourist trail it can be difficult to reach us. We advise that you aim to arrive in Bai Xep by 10pm at the latest as the village is poorly lit and you will have trouble finding us. Additionally our neighbours have to get up early to go to work and so any disturbance late at night is frowned upon.

The area is not developed for tourists so you won’t find your home comforts in the local shops – there is no 7-11 in the village. Life is a lot slower and simpler here and everyone is very laid back. One of the downsides to this is that things can often take longer than you might expect. Things that you may take for granted at home are a luxury here – for example, running water, electricity and WiFi. Whilst we make every effort to ensure that these things are provided, if you are the type of traveller that cannot live without these luxuries then this is probably not the place for you.

Please note that our facilities are spread across two sites – two minutes walk from each other. Whilst both are beach front, our original Life’s a Beach has a bar and is just steps away from a beautiful beach. Our new Homestay apartments are in our house on the other side of the village. This beach has purposely not been manicured as this is a working beach and we would like to leave this for the community - they don’t want to step over sunbathers while they mend their boats. It’s a small house with a more private feel it has a small outside area for relaxing and sunbathing and a communal kitchen area where you can prepare your own food if you wish – NOTE the facilities are for the use of paying Homestay guests only.

We have a great relationship with the village, anyone that jeopardises this by behaving inappropriately or not respecting our surroundings friends and neighbours will be asked to leave. Police will be called if anyone is suspected of using or carrying drugs.

We have a menu in the bar at our main resort that you can order from during the day until 17:30. At 18:30, we present a Homestyle communal dinner prepared by some local ladies from the village for 150,000 VND per person. If you would like to join us for this daily event then you must book by midday to ensure that there is enough food prepared for all. It’s a great opportunity to try many real local dishes prepared with Western Hygiene standards.
There are few alternative places to eat in the evening. You can get fantastic street food during the day in the village very cheaply but during the evening this is far less available.

We would like to be upfront that we are not a budget backpackers. For the area, we are priced at the mid range. Every night is different and is normally dictated by the guests and the atmosphere they create. Our main resort offers regular karaoke, BBQ, games, DJ and movie nights but we are certainly not a party hostel so if you’re looking for somewhere to smoke weed or skinny dip please find somewhere more suitable.

ARRIVING HERE

You have different options for how to get here. Many choose to make their own way here by motorbike and if this is your thing then please make sure that you aim to arrive before dark because, as is common throughout Vietnam, the roads can be unlit in places and in poor condition.
Cars and taxis can only get so far in to the village. When they drop you off you should continue to walk down through the village until you reach the Village Well. From there turn right and keep walking until you reach the beach. We are on the right hand side on the beach front. The villagers will point you in the right direction. Should you arrive at night please make sure that you have a torch as the pathways can be hazardous after dark.

The city of Quy Nhon has good transport links although they may not be at the most convenient times of day.

BY AIR
Quy Nhon airport (UIH) has a number of flights daily from Saigon and Hanoi. The easiest way to get to us is by taxi. This journey takes about 1 ¼ hours. We can arrange a taxi to meet you on arrival and bring you here for 500,000 VND payable directly to the driver – we do not take a cut. You could also take the shuttle bus to the Vietnam Airlines office on Mai Xuan Thuong. From there it is a 10 minute walk to the main bus terminal outside KFC where you can catch the T11 bus south to Bai Xep for 9000 VND. These buses leave approximately once per hour between 05:30 and 17:15 with a break for lunch. Please check your e-mails regularly before your flight as the flight times can change in the days leading up to your departure. If you have a taxi booked with us then remember to keep us informed.

BY RAIL
There are two railways stations nearby:
Quy Nhon train station is a 15 minute walk from the main bus terminal outside KFC where you can catch the T11 bus south to Bai Xep for 9000 VND. These buses leave approximately once per hour between 05:30 and 17:15 with a break for lunch. We can arrange a taxi to meet you on arrival and bring you here for 200,000 VND payable directly to the driver – we do not take a cut.
Dieu Tri train station is on the Reunification line. This is about 25 minutes away by taxi. We can arrange a taxi to meet you on arrival and bring you here for 300,000 VND payable directly to the driver – we do not take a cut.

BY BUS
Most buses arrive into Quy Nhon at the bus station on Tay Son in front of the Big C and Metro shopping centres. Very often they will let you off at the Petrol station in front of the bus station. From there you can catch the T11 bus south from in front of the Metro store to Bai Xep for 9000 VND. These buses leave approximately once per hour between 05:30 and 17:15 with a break for lunch. Alternatively you can catch a taxi from the bus station to us for about 150,000 VND. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange for a taxi to collect you from the bus station as the arrival times for the buses are very unreliable. We do not advise you to take a motorbike taxi as they rarely have a helmet for you to wear.
If you are coming from the south you can usually get the bus driver to let you out at the top of the village. Track your journey on Google Maps as he is unlikely to know the exact position and once you’re off the bus we are unlikely to be able to determine your position. Continue to walk down through the village until you reach the Village Well. From here turn right and keep walking until you reach the beach. We are on the right hand side on the beach front. The villagers will point you in the right direction. Should you arrive at night please make sure that you have a torch as the pathways can be hazardous after dark.

BY TAXI
If you are going to get a taxi yourself then please make sure you have clear instructions for how to reach us as many taxi drivers are unaware of us. Ask for Bai Xep (pronounced “Buy Sep”). If he tries to drop you at the Bai Xep sign then indicate to keep driving for another 200m where you’ll see our sign at the entrance to the village. Cars and taxis can only get so far in to the village. When they drop you off you should continue to walk down through the village until you reach the Village Well. From here turn right and keep walking until you reach the beach. We are on the right hand side on the beach front. The villagers will point you in the right direction. Should you arrive at night please make sure that you have a torch as the pathways can be hazardous after dark. We can arrange for a taxi to meet you from the Airport or Train Station. He will meet you with a sign with your name, wait should your arrival time be delayed and help you through the village with your luggage. This is a fixed price taxi but priced according to a metered taxi. You pay the driver directly – we do not take a cut.

So now that you know all about us and you’re sure that it is for you, please respond to this e-mail confirming your planned arrival time and if you would like to join us for the Communal dinner event on your first evening.

We look forward to meeting you soon and welcoming you to our home.

Steve, Gavin & the Life's a Beach Family
