HI-Sacramento offers budget travelers a rare opportunity to stay overnight in a stunning Gold Rush mansion – one of the last Victorians remaining on historic Merchant Row. From the grand entry hall to the elegant sitting rooms to the wrap-around veranda, the hostel holds many reminders of a bygone era, including rich wood paneling, antique wallpaper, chandeliers, hand-painted ceramic tiles, and a colorful glass skylight.

History buffs will relish the chance to explore California's Gold Rush past, with easy access from the hostel to the State Capitol, Old Sacramento, the California State History Museum, the Sacramento and American Rivers, and more. There are also plenty of dining and shopping options nearby.

The hostel is located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, just a short stroll from the State Capitol building, Old Sacramento, and other attractions. It is also easy walking distance to both the bus and train depot, and numerous local bus lines.

We offer a choice of shared dorm rooms or private rooms accommodating 1-3 people. Cook your meals in our fully equipped guest kitchen, and enjoy them in the beautiful antique dining room. Relax in elegant wood-paneled parlors, or take in the sunny Sacramento weather on the hostel's wrap-around veranda or stone patio with fountain, barbecue, and umbrella tables. Make new friends in the recreation room, which offers games, books, and a TV and DVDs.

The Sacramento Hostel is operated by the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting intercultural understanding, environmental stewardship, and world peace through travel. There is an additional daily membership fee of $4 per adult for non-hostelling International members.

Stays are limited to 7 days for Hostelling International members and 3 days for nonmembers.

Office hours are between 7:30am and 11:00pm. Check-in hours are between 2:00pm and 10:30pm. Luggage storage is available.

Cancellation Policy

Customers can cancel their reservation free of charge up to 1 day before arrival. After this date, charges will be applied by the property up to the first nights cost of the reservation, unless otherwise stated in the property’s conditions. Deposits paid are non refundable.
