Liked: The breakfast (jam and toast), late afternoon pastries, and evening soup are all wonderful bonuses. It's a neat little place that has character. The owners were great and helpful.

Disliked: If I had to say one bad thing about it, it's the sink. But then again, every sink in NZ is small.

Liked: Despite us making the booking for the wrong day, the manager honored our reservation and didn't charge us anything extra despite being a day late. Luckily there was a room available for us the following night. The hostel is large and well located near everything in greymouth. Guests are given an hour free internet and 2nd drink free at the bar, nice perks. Rooms are very comfortable and the doubles have sinks in the room.

Disliked: Nothing :)

Liked: The owners are really nice, they offered us some free pastries upon arrival and gave us a full rundown on things to do in greymouth. The kitchen is also very well equipped. The lounge area is also warm and cosy with the fireplace. We woke up late for check out and they still let us use the kitchen facilities after :)

Disliked: The bathrooms are not so clean and some of the lights werent working.

Liked: This is the old Duke of Marlborough Hotel just off the center of Greymouth, and it's so convenient to the city as well as to the train/bus. The best feature of the hostel is the host, Dory, who goes out of his way to make guest feel comfortable. He even brought bakery goods (pies, sandwiches) at 4 p.m., and soup at 7 p.m. and has toast/jam and there were other baked goods for breakfast...so he basically feeds the crowd! He also keeps the coal stove stoked, so the lounge/eating area is comfortable. I stayed there on a miserably cold/wet day, but he gave me an extra duvet plus a hot water bottle, and there is a small room heater...so I was quite comfortable, plus he upgraded my room at no charge. Dory and his wife own the old hotel, and they have painted it in bright, cheery colors, and make guests feel at home. The kitchen is quite good...tiled work surfaces at a good height for cooking, good stoves/microwave/ toaster/water boiler, etc. and plenty of free tea, coffee, sugar, etc. Actually, given all the good free food, one need not cook at all in this hostel!! Thanks, Dory.

Disliked: The weather outdoors was cold and parts of the hotel are not heated; however, compared to other hostels in the area, DUKE is pretty good, and Dory tries to compensate. Carpets are spotty in places/could use a scrub.

Liked: Dory the manager couldn't do enough for us, he was also very kind and gave us a free upgrade to a private room as Greymouth wasn't very busy at the time which was a nice change! There was free breakfast, soup and also bakery goodies available to us which was lovely and bikes free of charge. Kitchen was lovely and big, free internet to use there too.

Disliked: It is a little cold but there is a fire in the lounge area to warm you up.
