About The Gazebo Backpackers

The Gazebo Golden Bay Backpackers has been welcoming visitors for over 15 years. We are open during the summer months from December through March. We try to limit the guests to 5 or 6 since the hostel is actually Paul's and Raichel the dog's home.

We are centrally located in Golden Bay so that most attractions are easily reachable by foot, bike or the short car ride. Most guests without their own transportation use our free bicycles or hitch-hike easily to get around.

The hostel has two gardens. The front accommodates a few tents and has a large outdoor table for eating and a comfortable gazebo great for meditation or playing an instrument. (A gazebo is a shady retreat where one can sit out of the sun in a garden.)

The private back garden is made for lounging and includes an open solar shower and a deck for yoga or massage. It is ideal for afternoon sunbathing au naturel.

The facilities are clothing-optional. This means that nudity is acceptable although not required by any means. Very handy for taking a shower, enjoying the sun or practicing yoga. We have guests that stay clothed all the time or remain nude all the time. Many go from one to the other throughout the day. Others find this a good place to experiment with their first public nudity experience. "Wear what makes you comfortable but respect others' choices" is our motto.

Golden Bay is abundant in attractions from rock climbing, caving, sea kayaking, tramping (hiking), and of course swimming and beach walking. The most popular attraction at the hostel these last two years has been making a trip by bicycle to Payne's Ford to skinny dip at the Takaka River. You can jump off the cliffs or swing out on the Tarzan ropes into the water pools.

The second most popular is Wharariki Beach where you can walk into the dark underground caves at low tide. You will be completely blind as the roaring surf charges through the cave at you. Very scary.

And of course there are numerous safe beaches - a number which are traditionally clothing-optional. Keep in mind that public nudity is completely legal in New Zealand and practiced on many beaches here in Golden Bay.

Takaka itself is known for its live musicians, artists and organic produce. It is a small town but has excellent restaurants just a few minutes walk from the hostel. Most popular spot is the Tea Infusion - a German/Swiss bakery. Next is the Mussell Inn with its homemade beer and musical entertainment.
