26 May 2014

Travel Type:
With friends / other travellers

Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year Partying / nightlife Sightseeing & culture Sports, adventure or outdoor activities

Customer Travel Tip: Bring your vehicle or find somebody who has one. Getting around Anchorage or Alaska is next to impossible without one. You can try hitchhiking, which is reasonably safe, from what I've heard. Be careful which hostel you stay in. Some of them are not very well kept and house locals who may be harmless, but might have some psych issues that could put a damper on your vacation.

Liked: It's a good jumping off point and base camp for the rest of the state. Lots of resources here and a pretty central location for visiting other parts of Alaska. There are a few fun things to do around Anchorage, but most of the good stuff is at least 20 minutes away from downtown.

Disliked: Kind of a run down place at times. Some parts of ANC are populated predominantly by people without permanent residences or work. There seems to be a big alcohol and drug problem for a significant portion of the population.
