Customer Travel Tip: Great city to use as a base to explore the Carpathian mountains.

Liked: A great city to observe Ukrainian life and check out the culture in a smaller city environment. It is also a beautiful city to stroll about in, and has some very interesting architecture.

Disliked: No.

Customer Travel Tip: A day or two is all you need here—there's not THAT much to see and do. But it's a good weekend trip idea, and again, it's easy to get out to other cities in Ukraine from here.

Liked: It's easy to get around the city and also easy to get out to other cities in Ukraine (also a few in Slovakia or Hungary, depending on what you're looking to do). Also, there's some really, really good food (for cheap) in Uzhhorod.

Disliked: Not much nightlife when we were there (Saturday night) or else everything happened much later than we were out . . .

Customer Travel Tip: Hire bikes and cycle down to the village of Mali Selmentsi where you can cross into Slovakia for a couple of hours. It's a nice ride through flat countryside and pretty villages with great views. The village is fascinating with a sad history - the border was closed throughout the Soviet Union with families separated. The part of the village on the Slovak side, Velke Slemence, is noticeably smarter and more affluent.

Liked: I loved Uzhgorod! The old town streets near the castle are really pretty. The river banks are also lovely to walk along. There are a couple of really good restaurants and the whole town is great value for money. People were friendly and extremely helpful (when we hired bikes, for example). The town felt extremely safe to walk around. People were happy for us to speak Russian to them, and mostly replied in Russian (we'd been told that the Russian language was very unpopular in western Ukraine.)

Disliked: The bus station is unpleasant with unfriendly staff but that is normal in Ukraine! Not Uzhgorod's fault. One of the main streets on the south side of the river was being dug up and not very relaxing to walk along. It seemed difficult to find anywhere to get anything to eat except pizza on the north side of the river - the restaurants serving local food aren't very inviting.
