Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year Sightseeing & culture Sports, adventure or outdoor activities

Customer Travel Tip: Do not come to Turkey in July-August because it is very hot and it is hard to do any outdoor activities. Try local market on Saturday. Visit ancient ruins in Ephesus (nearby city).

Liked: I liked local Saturday market - you can buy eveyrthing there for cheap. You can also do some sightseeing in Selcuk (castle, basilica) as well as go to Ephesus to see ancient ruins. There are some places to eat, but there are not many opportunities to party. Local transport is good, there are lots of private minibuses that can take you to other cities. Selcuk is a place that you can relax at as well as a good city to do 1-day trips to cities nearby (Ephesus, Pamukkale etc).

Disliked: Weather - it was super hot in August.

Customer Travel Tip: Must go and see ephesus. If you are able the walk out is not to far and if you leave in the morning it won't be as hot! Theres a path that leads through some farms to get out there, if you eneter the cemetery and find a bridge on your right you can follow the path to the main road. The neighbouring town of Sirince is beautiful! Definitely worth a visit and you can catch a dolmus out there. Heaps of wine tasting but you must try the "proper fruit wine" as the locals say and this is pomegranate wine and cherry wine. Lots of little shops and places to eat and the churches give you a great view of the town!

Liked: Quite town with everything you need in walking distance of your accomadation. Hostels are all family run so get a real sense of culture. Very close to ephesus, we were able to walk out and then catch a dolmus back in. Everyone is very friendly and willing to give you directions or help on the street. Great food and all very cheap!

Disliked: Small town so doesn't have much night life other than that nothing to dislike.

Customer Travel Tip: Avoid summer...too hot

Liked: Small town. Loved the ruins. Loved the history.

Disliked: Super hot. No public transport to Virgin Mary House- and taxi cost 70 Turkish Lira. At the Station, people harass you about tours. As a solo female traveller, I was harassed by afew men. It got uncomfortable at times.

Customer Travel Tip: Don't use the taxi to get to Ephesus. Further on the bus station there is a service of mini-bus with frequent departures and its way cheaper! The taxi was 19 TL to bring my boyfriend and I there, while the bus was only 2,5 TL each. Worth it!

Liked: Efes

Disliked: Don't lose time at the Temple of Artemis. It might have been a world wonder of Antiquity, but nowadays it's basically a swamp with one column standing. 5 min and you are good there.

Customer Travel Tip: Ephesus. Ephesus

Liked: Ephesus is awesome.

Disliked: OK so I walked to Ephesus and it took maybe 40 mins. Dont go to the House of the Virgin Mary. Its not worth it. I got a ride up there from a nice guy with a car. Paid 20 lira to get in and walked thru it in 20 min. Then had to get back down to Selcuk. 50 Lira for a taxi...tourist special. I just started walking down and eventually just got picked up by a nice Turkish family who gave me a lift back to town. House of Virgin Mary is a Skip.

Customer Travel Tip: Walk around! Not ten minutes outside the city center is a wonderful gozleme (turkish pancake) restaurant, and there are ruins even in the middle of town, such as the aqueducts!

Liked: Adorable town, hasn't become too touristy which is great. Everyone is beyond friendly and helpful!

Disliked: Hard to reach late at night, though our transport problems could have been avoided if we had researched more thoroughly ahead of time.
