Customer Travel Tip: Church of Virgin Mary is far and hard to get to. I would only go if it has religious significance to you. Otherwise it's a very expensive cab, a very long walk or a tour. That way go to Efes on your own - start at the bottom at the Treasury before the tour groups start and in the morning for the best lighting. Tours seemed a bit rushed so get an audio tour if you want the history.

Liked: Come here for St. John's and Efes. Good food options, very cheap. Quiet in the evenings as all the Efes groups seem to stay in Kusadasi. Saturday market is for produce, not for cooked food. Good for cheap fruit if you are on the move.

Disliked: Not much nightlife at all. A couple of quiet bars to sit and have shisha or a drink but not really people to meet.

Customer Travel Tip: Take time to learn about the history of Ephesus as well as John, Jesus' disciple who took care of his mother in Ephesus after his death. It makes the experience much more meaningful while walking among the ruins.

Liked: Very relaxing. Ephesus is amazing. Visiting St. John's church is also an interesting sight.

Disliked: The Ephesus museum is closed for 2013.

Customer Travel Tip: Try to go with Palmukke bus instead of the other guys- their buses are better

Liked: Proximity to ephesus and the ability to book travel to Palmuchake (mispelled, I know)

Disliked: The bus companies at the station all give the same price for travel to different places- they've gotten together and eliminated competiton- or so it seems.

Customer Travel Tip: I heard that Atlas Airlines offers a free shuttle bus ride from Izmir Airport (the closest one to Selcuk) to the town, but do not know if this is still the case. There is a train operating a few times a day which stops at the station connected to the airport terminal (a five-minute walk) and takes less than an hour to arrive at Selcuk (and cost only TL 4.50 in 2013). This is convenient, though can be crowded.

Liked: The main reason why people come here is for a visit to Ephesus, one of the most important historic sites in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is very impressive and a 'must see' in Turkey. You can also see the ruins of St John's Basilica, and there is an Ephesus museum, but it was closed for renovations when I visited (April 2013). This small town has a resort-like atmosphere, with many small restaurants and cafes, some bars, and (of course) souvenir shops (check out Julia's Moonlight shop on Namik Kemal Street). Prices are lower than those of Istanbul and there is less pressure to buy things.

Disliked: The town is probably only worth two or three nights' stay. The Ephesus Museum was closed for renovations when I visited, and I would have thought that some highlights of the museum could have been displayed in a temporary location - visitors come from all over the world to see Ephesus, and will be disappointed to find that its treasures are not on display. There isn't much in the way of public transport, with the private 'minibus' services actually just glorified taxis with no timetables or prices displayed. Be careful with the taxi drivers - check on prices first. My friend and I just walked to Ephesus (3 or 4 km), quite feasible if the weather is good.

Customer Travel Tip: Go eat at Nur Restaurant next to the ruins of the aqueduct close to the train station. Nice view, nice cats, and a super nice owner who would always bring us treats (apple tea, strawberries, juice) for free!

Liked: A small town but beautiful surroundings with lots to do, and not just Ephesus -- also Church of the Virgin Mary, Cave of the Seven Sleepers, Isa Bey Mosque, ruins of the Temple of Artemis, and the ruins of St John's Basilica. Saturday mornings there' s big bazaar over by the bus station (otogar). There's a beach not too far away as well. There were plenty of outdoor cafes, but like the rest of the Turkey they all had more or less the same type of food. And there were tons of cats!

Disliked: Most of the sights are outside of the city proper. The city itself is nice for a meal and an hour or two, but other than that there's not too much to do.

Customer Travel Tip: After visiting Ephesus, go to Sirince, a 20-minute ride by dolmus. A very scenic Greek village. Also, visit Kusadasi.

Liked: Selcuk is a great place to stay: only minutes from Ephesus, you can walk there. Dolmuses whisk you off to Sirince and Kusadasi in only 20 minutes. Lots of great restaurants in Selcuk and plenty of good-value day trips offered.
