Customer Travel Tip: Visit not only the main building of the Hermitage but also the General Staff building where are all the Impressionist and "Post Impressionist" paintings.

Liked: Hermitage. Best museum ever.

Disliked: I was glad I could go to the gay clubs and feel safe. But it is impossible to show affection in public, though. It was not as homophobic as I was expecting, but it is still an awkward situation.

Customer Travel Tip: The Hermitage Museum - see it, leave at least 1 full day to see it and wear comfortable shoes. My guidebook said to book online to avoid queues which I stupidly ignored. You can book online the day before and this allows you to pretty much walk straight in. I queued for at least 40 minutes to buy the ticket on the day and it was free because I'm a student. A lot of other places need you to have something called an ISCC (International Student Connect Card) to prove you are a student which I, unfortunately didn't have but they gave me the free ticket here anyway. Book the Faberge museum online 1 - 2 days before going as you have to do the tour and you need to book into a slot.

Liked: I absolutely adored St. Petersburg. I arrived at night and it reminded me a lot of London. It's a young and vibrant city with lots of places open late or 24 hours. It's beautiful and historic of course as well. The Hermitage Museum at the Winter Palace has to be one of if not the most incredible places I've ever visited. I could spend a year just exploring it. More than anything, I found St. P to just be a really welcoming, traveler friendly city. All of the signs on the Metro and around the city are written in both Cyrillic and the latin alphabet and many are in English. I also found a lot of people in shops and at different sights spoke English or if they didn't, they were at least friendly and wanted to understand me (You will NOT find this in Moscow). I only spent 3 days here but I'm dying to go back and bring my parents and friends. I'm already planning a trip for next year to explore the city more. I recommend it.
