Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year Beach / sunbathing Sightseeing & culture Sports, adventure or outdoor activities

Customer Travel Tip: Explore a bit more! Go to Chinatown. Try the different foods. Use the train system and jeepneys. Talk to people. Hold on to your bag and be careful not to flash the cash!

Liked: Full of character and a sense of determination. People were generally friendly and talkative and caring. It has elements of commercialism and culture. The churches are interesting to visit and it is overtly sexually liberal, even more so than places like Brighton in England. This is refreshing to see.

Disliked: There is a great deal of child poverty and prostitution.

Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year

Customer Travel Tip: Get in, see it, and get out to the pretty parts of the Philippines. Or stay and discover something you love. "Different strokes for different folks" and all that.

Liked: The streets were the best part, even though there's a lot of poverty. My best memories of Manila were pick-up basketball games, street market, playing in the rain with street children, and just walking the city and observing. I doubt the average backpacker would engage in any of that though. Most of the westerners I talked to there (which was very few, only saw maybe 10 the week I was there) didn't feel safe engaging the city in that way.

Disliked: It's a very big, dirty, city. There aren't very many calm places to relax unless you want to go to the mall (though, on the other hand, that's not very calm either.) One or two days here is enough.

Customer Travel Tip: Manila is ok but the rest of the phillipines is much nicer, so keep the visit short. Go to Wensha soa before your flight home. It's a 24 hour spa with a buffet. If you get a massage, you can stay for 6 hours.

Liked: I liked the contrast between the busy streets and the calm chinese cemetery, and fort santiago.

Disliked: Too loud and noisy, and people are more aggressive here when soliciting your business or begging.
