Customer Travel Tip: Take the water taxi ($25 each way) from Te Anau across to Brod Bay for the Kepler track (Luxmore Hut day trip option). Even though you can technically walk there, you will likely find that the 2.5 hour walk back around the lake once you've finished takes the gloss off what is already a very big day. That's the advice that I was given, and I took it - some other people who were staying at the backpackers decided to walk the whole way and were really not too happy when they got back at the end of the day. Some even didn't make it up to the hut in time before they had to turn around and come back before it started getting dark.
Liked: Te Anau is the perfect place for access to Milford Sound and the famous "Great Walks" tracks: Kepler, Routeburn and Hollyford. Kepler in particular in close - you can actually walk to the track from the township itself - though that will add 2.5 hours each way to your journey; I recommend parting with the money for a quick water taxi instead. You can do Kepler as a day option too - just walk up to Luxmore Hut (and even the summit if time permits), then turn around and come back - it makes a good day walk. Te Anau is a very small town so there is no public transport - but everything is within walking distance, so it is fine. If you want to go to Milford Sound and the other tracks you have the option of either hiring a car, or there are companies that will take you there (I personally recommend Trips & Tramps). The locals are friendly, and Te Anau boasts spectacular scenery in its own right.
Disliked: The town is a bit of a sleepy hollow with no nightlife - the pubs and restaurants are few and very quiet, but this may have had something to do with the time of year I visited - the place probably comes a bit more to life in high season. That being said, people don't come to Te Anau for the nightlife, it is more for Milford Sound, tramping, and other outdoor activities. Wonderful place!

Customer Travel Tip: Ofcourse this must be the Kepler Track. A less popular, but nonetheless beautiful place to visit are the Mavora Lakes. Just 1 hour from Te Anau, 40 kilometre from the highway.
Liked: The closeness to the Kepler Track and beautiful Lake Te Anau on your doorstep.
Disliked: The remoteness from the living world.
