Customer Travel Tip: There are a lot of booths selling tours, but I think they're all basically run by one company. They're pretty good. Strangely, the people selling the tours don't always list all the things you'll do: the guides will usually offer to take you to a cenote or a Mayan village, for a few extra pesos of course.
Liked: It's a pretty town and there are a number of good tours in the area--Mayan ruins, cenotes (sinkholes to swim in), caves, convents, haciendas, model Mayan houses, flamingos. There's a good deal of shopping for Mayan souvenirs. If, like me, you're visiting Cancun and looking for another city in the area to visit, Merida is a solid choice, though Valladolid is closer and also nice, and I think Campeche is nicer still but farther away (I didn't go).
Disliked: It's hot. Also, LP said Merida has the best museums in the area. Well, that may be true, but they're still nothing to write home about. Overall, there's no must-sees in Merida, and it can get pretty hot and muggy, but it's still a nice place.

Customer Travel Tip: -Wear good shoes and watch your feet. The sidewalks can be treacherous. -When walking around, stay on the shady side of the street; that's where the locals are, and you won't show up to your destination sweaty and sunburned. -If it has plastic patio furniture, more often than not, the food is amazing and cheap. Don't eat any place with real furniture if you can avoid it. -The closer you get to the centro/zocalo, the more annoying the salesman get. Be sure to venture away and get a view of the less touristy areas. -They won't ever bring you the bill until you ask for it, so learn how to do that in Spanish (listo para pagar), and if nothing else, learn the numbers. Nothing is worse than thinking cientos instead of centavos for half of your trip...
Liked: Merida is spectacular! It's clean, bright, colorful. The people are friendly, Hola's everywhere you go, and in the few instances when we got lost (the street #s are hard to get used to for some people), we never felt we had wandered into a bad neighborhood or were in any danger. The city does amazing things for its residents and tourists from other parts of Mexico, and just being a fly on the wall of this cultural marvel was a total sensory overload.
Disliked: The traffic is loud and a little crazy. Get used to jaywalking, the sidewalks are uneven and broken in places, so you have to watch where you step, but also sometimes wide enough for four to walk abreast, sometimes to narrow for one. It all adds to the charm, but it's not a city for heels.
