Customer Travel Tip: Avoid Plaza Forch zone. Dangerous after sundown and pretty ugly in my opinion.

Liked: Cool city. Great to just walk around. Nice historic centre. People are pretty nice overall.

Disliked: Does not feel to safe in all parts. The weather is also not amazing, but pretty ok for tourism purposes (not too much rain and not too cold, but neither sunny and warm such as Medellin for example).

Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year

Customer Travel Tip: Have a couple of days for the city - don't miss the Old Town and try local food and juices in the market and local restaurants. $3 for 3 courses of local food: you can't go wrong! Factor in a day for Cotopaxi/more if you want to stay there. Don't go to Otavalo as a day trip, it's a friendly place that deserves a night or two there, especially if then heading into Colombia

Liked: Beautiful Old Town, largely friendly people, easy to get around on foot or public transport (very cheap!), good local excursion e.g. to Cotopaxi (pre-eruption!)

Disliked: As in any big city be aware, be sensible, have your wits about you. Sometimes I felt a bit on edge but I think some travellers get scared off that Quito is a really dangerous place. It's not, and is well worth a visit, but just be sensible.

Customer Travel Tip: Leave time for walking to appreciate the details of the city, Use the walking tours on the tourist maps rather than just rushing from one place to another on a bus or with a guide.

Liked: Beautiful architecture, nice parks, some streets closed to traffic on Sundays, spontaneous life and entertainment in the plazas, nice museums and cultural venues

Disliked: Demonstrations and counter-demonstrations were disturbing and often seemed close to violence

Customer Travel Tip: Have a good base in Quito. Take a good supply of $1 notes. Have a very good map. Know where you are walking and where the buses/metro are taking you. Enjoy the visit.

Liked: Learning about the history of the city and the diversity of the people that live in the city. Visiting the Old Town to view the building architecture and interior decor. Watching some of the parades and festivities associated with Easter. Sampling traditional foods the locals enjoy in the plazas and markets. Using public transport to visit places of interest out of the city.

Disliked: Vendors giving a dollar change in coins but not willing to take a dollar in change as payment. Constantly being alert of your personal safety and belongings.

Backpacking / gap year Sightseeing & culture

Customer Travel Tip: People say it's dangerous after dark and although I didn't experience any problems myself I would recommend always getting a cab or at least walking in a group, never alone after dark.

Liked: Not too expensive and a good place to see a few sights without feeling like you'll miss out on a lot if you're only here for a few days. Good potential for day trips e.g. Cotopaxi, Mitad del Mundo (equator) or Otavalo market.

Disliked: Not many shops/supermarkets seem to be open early in the mornings.

Customer Travel Tip: Be prepared for a big city. Much bigger distances between places than you expect. The bus/metro travel is fantastic and cheap

Liked: Nice colonial city. Good location for getting to other parts of Ecuador. Some good museums.

Disliked: Old town closes at night. The Mariscal district, which is where the restaurants are mainly located was not to our taste. Expensive, mediocre food and drink.
