Customer Travel Tip: Hire a little pedipod to initially take you on a little tour of the town. Then walk to the specific places you want to visit

Liked: Charming little town

Disliked: Too many tourists, too many of which were extremely curious about tall western females.

Customer Travel Tip: Do not get the train from xian - pingyao! It's 13 hours and books up quite quickly. Instead get the bus from xian to taiyuan and ask the coach driver to stop at the pingyao tollbooth (it goes right past it and will save 4 hours off your journey). Ask the hostel to send a taxi to collect you from the booth - cost us 20 yuan (£2). This is by far the easiest and quickest way!

Liked: After the hustle and bustle of xian, pingyao was a serene, beautiful stop on our journey. As a small place we hired bikes and cycled round seeing all the sites, including the shaunglin temple (25 mins bike ride - be careful on the main road). It's really a place to spend chilling out, seeing a few sites and enjoying the nice weather.

Disliked: We went at the start of may (quite peaceful and not too many people) so not sure what it's like in real tourist season - I've heard it's very busy so you may want to think about when you go?

Trip Type:
Backpacking / gap year Sightseeing & culture

Customer Travel Tip: Don't buy the 150 yuan ticket to see all the attractions, it's not worth it; probably wouldn't spend more than a day in Pingyao as it's small with not a lot to see/do

Liked: enjoyed walking around the streets of the old town before the crowds arrived; enjoyed relaxing in the bars although most of them seemed pretty quiet

Disliked: the museums were pretty dull and had limited english information; there was a great deal of construction work going on; poor value for money in some of the food places and also for the attractions
