Customer Travel Tip: Walk out side the walls, the food market there has something other than the '108 Pingyao snacks' that are sold at every restaurant within the walls (the restaurants all have the same photos, decor and slogans on the walls)

Liked: Leaving the city walls to explore

Disliked: most of the ancient town, we got lost every time because it all looks exactly the same. There is 1000's of tourists

Customer Travel Tip: see all you can and enjoy people, eatery and the splendid site.

Liked: the old Chinese architecture of the town and its hotels and hostels (something that is unfortunately too rare in today's China!).

Disliked: of course very touristy; but nowadays an old town can only survive that way...

Customer Travel Tip: I really recommend the city itself, but make sure you go there when the Chinese people don't have holidays and maybe when there are more other foreign traveller in the high season.

Liked: Pingyao is a nice old Chinese city. Probably the last one remained in this authentic way. The houses and courtyards are beautiful and you have a nice atmosphere with all these narrow streets.

Disliked: I was there on the day of the lantern festival. The whole city was crowded with Chinese travelers, probably from the sourrounding countryside, that seem to never have seen a foreigner in their life before. I was kind of the big attraction there, with all people staring at me. They often took pictures right in front of my face without asking, they also talked a lot about me in Chinese, so I wasn't so happy to understand Chinese. Sometimes I was so tired of all the people that I didn't want to leave my hostel.

Customer Travel Tip: Enjoy the history and the chance to chill out and relax the pace.

Liked: The historical architecture, walking on the city wall and visiting all the old buildings and temples. Enjoyed the food at various cafes. Friendly interaction with the locals in cafes and on the street.

Disliked: The pollution between Tianyuan and Pingyao was very bad. While it is not so bad over old Pingyao, the fact that they use coal for fuel for heating and cooking everywhere it is hard to avoid.

Trip Type:

Customer Travel Tip: I would say stay one or two nights at most. There is not a huge amount to do past relaxing and drinking beer... Although we did a lot of that.

Liked: Very good place to chill out, a lot of cheap restaurants. The city walls were fantastic although large parts were under repair.

Disliked: Apart from the walls there wasn't much to see. The audio guide (similar to many of the Chinese audio guides) was deathly dull, droning on about facts and figures. Where are all the stories?

Customer Travel Tip: Skip it! Or go there to see Mian Shan, a really outlandish place.

Disliked: Extremeley (really extremely) touristic with nothing but cheap knick-knack on sale and touristy restaurants within the city walls. Stayed 3 nights on a 1 month trip to china and should have skipped this town altogether.

Customer Travel Tip: If you are only there for a day and do not want to shell out for the 3-day ticket, it is possible to sneak into a few of the main sights...

Liked: The Chinese tourism authorities have not messed it up.
