The Best Resorts for a Cheap Ski Holiday

*Newsflash* cheap ski holidays are possible!

Every year the Post Office surveys the top 10 skiing destinations and ranks them in order of price. They use this equation to work out the overall cost for a 6-day skiing holiday…

Lift pass + equipment hire + ski tuition + food and drink =
their ranking in the Ski Resort Report.

For us budget skiers it’s the top 5 we’re interested in, so here they are with the nearest budget hotels and hostels to make your ski vacation even cheaper. I’ve even thrown in a few amazing skiing tricks to whet your appetite too…

1. Bansko, Bulgaria

The average holiday here comes to €306pp according to the Ski Resort Report. The Bansko ski resort has the best snow record and the longest ski season (15 Dec-15 May) in Bulgaria which means there are excellent ski facilities. The unique architecture and cultural monuments, combined with the apres ski in the traditional Bansko taverns ‘Mehanas’, makes it a top choice for budget travellers after some fun. You can also relax in the UNESCO site of the National Park Pirin after a day on the slopes. Our hostels in Bansko start at just €8.50pppn.

2. Arinsal, Andorra

The Post Office found a holiday here comes to around €429pp. It’s a small town but very popular meaning everything you need is within easy reach. It’s a great place for beginners and intermediates to brush up on their skiing prowess. Apartaments/Hostel @anem.com in Ordino is just 6km* away (10 mins drive*) and beds start from €15pppn, or you could try the area of Andorra la Vella which is just 10km (18 mins drive) away, with hostels starting at €15.28pppn.

3. Bohinj, Slovenia

Slovenia is a great skiing destination when you’re on a budget, one of the top resorts is Bled, you find out more about the skiing there in the Top 5 Ski Holidays in Europe. The Post Office estimates a holiday in Bohinj will come to around  €432pp. Not only is this an excellent place for skiing, it’s also a beautiful town to admire. There are a few resorts, the most popular being the Vogel Ski Centre. We have plenty of accommodation in Bohinj in Slovenia starting from just €12pppn.

4. Formigal, Spain

Formigal is just 6km from the French border and a holiday here will cost, on average, €463pp. You’ll find a good range of wide, well groomed pistes to suit all standards here. The non stop shuttle bus service takes visitors free from the centre of Formigal to the three principal ski bases. The biggest vertical drop is 750m and you’ll find 39 black runs to keep the adrenaline flowing. Just a 21-minute drive away, and 18km, you’ll find Huesca where our hostels start at €20pppn.

5. Interlaken, Switzerland

Adelboden in Switzerland came in at number 8 at around €762pp, but you can get a cheaper holiday in nearby Interlaken. I’ve done some research and I reckon a 6-day lift pass, 6-day ski hire and 3 days of lessons plus food and drink will be around €582pp. If you want a break from the skiing there are plenty of other things to do in Interlaken too, check out our Top 10 Things to do in Interlaken. Some of our hostels in Interlaken are right by the slopes and they start at just €16.23pppn.
