If you’re anything like us in sunny old England, as soon as the nights draw in, you might start itching for a bit of fun in the sun. It’s just not fair to be sitting shivering at home when there are hundreds of places still blessed with spotless sunshine!
We can’t all afford a long haul flight to somewhere exotic, but luckily there are some winter sun destinations closer than you think, where low season means less crowds, cheaper flights, and more budget rooms available. Savvy travelers always holiday out of season, and never have horror stories of airport queues and getting up at 7am to ‘reserve’ a sun lounger with a beach towel!
So to help you find a bargain winter beach break, we’re running a series of cheap winter sun destinations, starting with…Marbella.
One of the warmest places in mainland Europe in winter, temperatures in Marbella can still reach a scorching 25ºc in December. This celeb-magnet is also one of the chicest spots in the Med, home to well-maintained, sandy beaches, an elegant marina of mega-yachts, heaps of golf-courses and the ‘Golden Mile’; a strip of huge beachfront villas. But even if you don’t have a trust fund, you can still join the jet-set on Marbella’s sandy shores in winter.
Despite the sunny temperatures, Marbella isn’t a major winter destination, with the summer crowds decreasing by around 30%. This is great news if you’re on a budget, as you can enjoy a ‘luxury’ resort like Marbella for less in low season.
Firstly, Marbella isn’t all about glitz and glamour – the quaint Spanish Old Town is full of authentic tapas bars, quirky boutiques and offbeat bars, and the beautiful beaches are great for watersports.
If you get bored of sunbathing, the fascinating region of Andalucia is yours to explore, with Moorish palaces and amazing architecture on offer in Granada and Seville. Plus there are a bunch of affordable places to stay in Marbella, close to all the beach and the Spanish Quarter.
Here are Marbella’s best hostels:
This hostel is right in the heart of Marbella’s Old Town, and only a few minutes on foot to the beach. Sunbathe on the scenic roof terrace by day, and chill out in the bar and lounge with log fire in the evening. With a great location, friendly staff and a homely atmosphere, it’s no wonder this is one of Marbella’s top-rated hostels.
Popular for its sociable staff and delicious breakfasts, the Hostal Berlin has free internet, comfortable rooms and cheap car hire if you fancy going furthur afield. Plus all the advice on the local golf courses that you would ever need!
This charming hotel has been recently renovated, and the huge private rooms all have a TV. But don’t spend all day in your room, as the beach and the buzzing bars of Puerto Banus are only 5 minutes away!
