Amsterdam NYE fireworks and street parties
The Dutch go in for fireworks big time. The streets are ablaze with firecrackers, sparklers and all sorts of whizzbangs.
Best views: For the best view of free fireworks, head to the area between Prinsengracht and Bloemgracht. Alternatively go to one of the bridges, particularly the Magere Brug bridge over the Amstel River which twinkles with reflections!
Central: The largest free New Year’s Eve countdown is at Oosterdok. VOC ship The Amsterdam and the Scheepvaartmuseum make for a beautiful backdrop to celebrations which include bands, DJs and a fireworks extravaganza at midnight. The event kicks off at 9:30pm and you can take alcohol but no glasses.
Other locations for enjoying the fireworks and big screens include Dam Square, Rembrandtplein and Nieuwmarkt (the Amsterdam Chinatown neighbourhood). For more of a local vibe, head for trendy Jordaan and the Western Canal Ring. For festive eats, buy oliebollen sugary donuts and appelflappen apple fritters from one of the food stands.

Trouw: A former newspaper printing warehouse (which still has the old print press), Trouw is now a club, bar and restaurant under one roof. The dancefloor is vast with a roof at least three storys high, plus cheap drinks and multi-level chill-out spaces. NYE celebrations here are the hottest house and techno ticket in town – no wonder all the presale for this year’s TWEEDUIZENDTROUW event have been snapped up. Your best bet now is to grab one of the remaining ‘restaurant package’ tickets, where you get a great meal thrown in too. Hey, Trouw takes care of you that way.

Putting on a sparkling NYE line up, under a thick layer of glitter with DJs and live performances until sunrise (and disco workouts in the basement). Dress code: glitter, glitter and more glitter! Well, the club night is called Glitterazzi…

Public transport starts to wind down in the early evening, stopping completely by 8pm. With the amount of people on the streets, it’d be downright dangerous to run trams!
A reduced metro and bus service resumes at 12am – check the official Amsterdam Public Transport site for more information. Our advice? Bring a map and prepare to walk to and from where you’re staying.
Happy new year in Amsterdam!
