Now we’re entering summer’s final sprint, why not see it through with a bang. Check out our pick of the 9 best August events happening around the world…

1. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

What: The largest arts festival on the planet, where thousands of people from all around the world come together and perform. Covering comedy, dance, drama and music, this is where the finest up and coming and established artists come to practice their craft. Eclectic and eccentric to the point that I saw Hamlet performed on a bouncy castle one year – true story.

Where: Edinburgh, Scotland

2. International Berlin Beer Festival

International Berlin Beer Festival

What: Sample close to 2,000 beers by 320 different breweries from 86 countries. Best part? Entry to the festival is free. Prost!

Where: “Beer Mile” lies along Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin, Germany

When: August 1st – 3rd, 2014

3. The Great British Beer Festival

The Great British Beer Festival

What: It may not be as big as the Berlin beer festival, but with more than 800 ales, ciders, perries and foreign beers to try, it’s well worth the trip. Cheers!

Where: Olympia in London, UK

When: August 12th – 16th, 2014

4. Buenos Aires Tango Festival

What: A two week annual festival, culminating in a very sensual and exciting Argentine tango competition with participants coming from all around the world.

Where: In the birthplace of tango – Buenos Aires, Argentina

5. International Beatleweek

International Beatleweek

What: This annual festival celebrates the most famous pop group the world has ever known – The Beatles. The festival features live gigs,  exhibitions, memorabilia sales, guest speakers, video shows, sightseeing tours and more.

Where: In the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, UK

When: August 20th – 26th, 2014

6. Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival

What: Europe’s biggest street festival hits West London every year and is an explosion of costumes, music, dancing, floats, Caribbean food and partying.

Where: Notting Hill in London, UK of course!

When: August 24th – August 25th (bank holiday Monday), 2014

7. Burning Man

Burning Man

What: It’s hard to explain exactly what Burning Man is… the only way to REALLY know what it’s all about, is to go yourself (or so I’m told). It’s basically an experimental community in the middle of the desert filled with art, music, dance and gifting. The festival culminates in a ritual burning of a large wooden effigy… hence the name.

Where: In the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, USA

When: August 25th – September 1st, 2014

8. La Tomatina

La Tomatina

What: A epic food war where tomatoes are the weapon of choice.

Where: The Spanish town of Buñol, which is located about 15 miles outside of Valencia

When: August 27th, 2014

9. Uitmarkt


What: This free festival marks the opening of the cultural season in Amsterdam and features performances ranging from hip hop and dance to classical and jazz.

Where: All around Museumplein and Leidseplein in Amersterdam, the Netherlands

When: August 29th – 31st, 2014
