9 of the Best Places to go for New Year’s Eve

Not long to go now until New Year’s Eve, but where oh where to spend it? We’ve found the best street parties, biggest firework displays and top club nights to bring you nine of the best cheap and cheerful New Year’s Eves around the world.

Fact lovers: The island of Kiribati in the Pacific is officially the first place in the world to see in the New Year, and 22 hours later Midway Island in Samoa is the last.

1. Sydney, Australia

After Wellington in New Zealand Sydney is the next big capital city to greet the New Year. Around the world millions of people watch the incredible fireworks display over the Sydney Harbour Bridge on television, but the celebrations don’t end there. You can party till dawn in the many pubs and clubs offering special nights on 31 December.

2. Barcelona, Spain

As the clock strikes 12 in Barcelona it’s traditional to eat 12 grapes, one following each chime, to ensure your year will begin sweetly. There are no fireworks in Barcelona, instead the Torre Agbar tower has a light show, or you can go to one of the many ‘cotillón and copas parties’ – meaning party accessories like hats and horns, and drinks are included.

3. Berlin, Germany

Of course, 24-hour people love a bit of Berlin action, and on New Year the city truly excels itself. The street party at Brandenburg Gate is a good starting point, but before you get chilled to the bone get yourself to one of the famous super clubs where you can rave the 1 January away to your heart’s content.

Champagne on the Champs-Elysees, what better way is there to bring in the New Year? You’ll see the Eiffel Tower’s annual light show and afterwards party your way around the pubs and clubs of the Montmartre.

Bring in the New Year partying in the main squares of the Dam and Rembrandtplein to watch the fireworks and bask in the atmosphere. 7. Edinburgh, Scotland

The Hogmanay in Scotland is the highlight of any party person’s social calendar. The legendary four-day party includes a torchlight procession, street performers and ceilidh dancing before the huge firework display at midnight. This year Pet Shop Boys are headling the concert.

An estimated two million party goers descend on Copacabana Beach on New Year’s Eve. You can eat, drink, watch fireworks and dance until the small hours. Around the rest of Brazil there are huge beach parties and impressive fireworks displays, just be prepared to part with some cash for the high club prices though, and when I say ‘some cash’ I mean €200+. Yikes.

9. New York City, USA

Times Square is the place to be for New Year’s Eve in New York. Thousands gather from 3pm to watch the famous ball drop as the clock strikes midnight. The pubs and clubs will welcome you with open arms for a warming drink afterwards, but try to get one with a roof terrace.
