How to Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh 2014

Head to the famous Hogmanay in Edinburgh for your 2014 New Year’s Eve celebrations and you’ll be joining one of the biggest parties in the world.

Lilly Allen will be performing at this year’s Concert in the Gardens, as well as tons more musical talents making an appearance at the New Year’s Eve Street Party. There’ll be torch processions through the Edinburgh streets, candlelit gigs, fireworks, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of eating. What more could you ask for in a New Year’s blow out?

The party atmosphere is catching, so expect to have the time of your life alongside the other 100,000 people who descend on the city for the legendary Edinburgh Hogmanay.

Edinburgh City Centre: Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party 2014 takes place on Princes Street and the surrounding side streets. The party will kick off at 7pm and the festivities will press on until 1am . There’s no entry after 11pm so don’t leave it too late to get there and remember, you can get all your food and drink from stalls. Keep things cheap by bringing your own booze, but decant it into plastic containers first or it will be confiscated, and there’s nothing more heartbreaking than having your New Year’s Eve tipples taken away. At the stroke of midnight in 2015 4.5 tonnes of pyrotechnics will fill the sky. Tickets are £20.00, with a £2.10 booking fee, buy them here.

Concert in the Gardens: This year Lilly Allen and Soul to Soul take to the stage at the concert in Edinburgh Castle’s gardens. You’ll bring in the new year with Edinburgh Castle as your backdrop and dance your way into 2015 with live music, DJs, giant screens, outdoor bars and the world famous Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Midnight Fireworks. Buy a ticket to the Concert in the Gardens and you’ll also get access to the Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party. The stage is live from 9pm-1am. Tickets start at £41, but they’re selling fast so hurry!

Mound Precinct: If you want to bring in the New Year dosy-doeing and round-you-going join the huge outdoor keilidh (Gaelic word for an event that involves dancing) up at Mound Precinct where you can learn the keilidh steps to some traditional Scottish music. There’ll be a keilidh caller to teach you the moves so don’t worry if you’re a beginner. Your ticket gives you access to an exclusive food and drink area and from the mound you’ll also get incredible views of the spectacular midnight fireworks. The Edinburgh Keilidh is 9pm-1am and tickets are £40, including access to the Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party.

Edinburgh’s super-club the City Nightclub will host this year’s biggest NYE party. Music will be mainly chart dance hits, with appearances from some huge DJ names. There are seven rooms with a total capacity for 2000 people.

Edinburgh Hogmany night buses run until late on New Year’s eve and they’re completely free. Find out more here.

Trains services finish earlier than usual on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day in Edinburgh there will be no ScotRail Trains and other operators won’t run between Edinburgh and Dundee/Aberdeen/Inverness and Glasgow Central. Click the link to check your last train.
