5 of the best cities for vegetarian travel

Vegetarianism -the meatless lifestyle that’s kind to your wallet and light on your cholesterol levels. Although some may argue that humans are carnivorous by nature, the truth is most of mankind throughout history has lived on vegetable-based diets.

Despite the growing numbers of vegetarians across the globe, it can sometimes be hard to find decent options when going out to eat. However, luckily there are some places where living a plant based lifestyle works in your favour and will afford you some tasty options. Here are just a few of the world’s herbivore-friendly cities:

Portland, Oregon USA

As one of the most hipster cities in the world, it’s no surprise that Portland is number one on this list because let’s be honest, you don’t fit into your size zero skinny jeans by eating pork chops or chicken wings every day. On a more serious note however, Portland is brimming with a multitude of vegetarian hotspots including The Farm Café offering farm to table meals, and Natural Selection serving upscale modern European food. No matter where you go, you won’t struggle to find a good vegetarian meal in this city.

Barcelona, Spain

Despite Spain’s pork-loving reputation, Vegetarian culture is on the rise in this kingdom. Barcelona in particular is leading this new culinary chapter in the Spanish world by offering up a myriad of delicious veggie options. Vegetalia is known for providing mouthwatering meals using ingredients grown in its own private garden. For those that enjoy eating their vegetables surrounded by exposed brick and an all-round chic interior, Teresa Carles is the place to go. The menu caters to all palates which means you can bring your carnivorous friends along too!

Chennai, India

There is no country more closely associated with vegetarianism than India, and Chennai in eastern India definitely has more than their fair share of green menus. For a delicious, veg-only Italian/Indian meal, head over to Dario’s and indulge while enjoying the beautiful indoor and outdoor décor. For a more authentic experience, you will want to try the south Indian delicacies on offer at Mahamudra – wholesome vegetarian cuisine that will pamper your taste buds.

Cuenca, Ecuador

Despite being home to the world famous cuy (roasted guinea pig), Ecuador is also surprisingly home to a variety of delicious vegetarian restaurants. El Paraiso is a favourite among locals and is always packed from open to close. Try one of their giant fruit salads as an accompaniment to your lunch, we promise you won’t regret it. Slightly on the higher end of the price scale, but still less than £2 for a meal, Govinda’s Vegetariano offers set lunch and dinner menus which include rice, salad, juice, and a main course. El Paraiso is located on the corner of Simon Bolivar and Manuel Vega and Govinda’s Vegetariano is located at Juan Jaramillo 7-27 and Borrero.

Berlin, Germany

How did the home of the bratwurst end up on this list? Well, Berlin has worked really hard over the years to promote a more vegetarian friendly community, and this effort it is evident throughout the city. For a typical German cuisine with a vegetarian and vegan flair, check out Kopps. Located in the heart of the city, this is the perfect spot to stop by for brunch, lunch or dinner. If you go out in mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians, Chipps is the place to go.
