How to Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Berlin 2014

Berlin New Year's Eve

Berlin might just be the clubbing mecca of the world; its legendary nightlife attracts night owls and 24hr party people who just can’t get enough of the dance floor, all year round. So it’s not surprising that on a night as big as New Year’s Eve, Berlin pulls out all the stops.

For a cheap New Year’s Eve Brandenburg Gate is Berlin’s largest outdoor street party, and it’s free. But sooner or later, sub zero temperatures will force you indoors. We’ve got the scoop on the best Berlin clubs and where to find some of the liveliest 2014 New Year’s Eve parties happening at city hotspots.

NYE fireworks and street parties

Brandenburg Gate NYE Stage

Where: Brandenburg Gate; over 1 million party-goers attend this bumper event of fireworks and live music. The largest street party in the city is free and centred between Brandenburg Tor at Straße des 17. Juni through to the Siegessäule.

When does it start: Events on stage kick off at about 7pm and the lineup for this year will be confirmed in December. There will also be light shows, food stalls, tents and an open-air disco under the stars.

What can I take? Personal fireworks and sharp objects (including glass bottles), aeorosols and cans of drink are not allowed. Alcohol is permitted in plastic bottle but entrants are restricted to 1/2 per person.

Getting there: There are 5 entrances: Bellevue, Tiergarten, Potsdamer Platz, Friedrichstrasse, Koch Street. Be aware, the S-Bahn station Unter den Linden closes at 5pm. The front entrance usually gets crowded and closes early so you might be redirected to the rear entrance.

The best Berlin clubs for NYE

Not all venues have confirmed their New Year’s Eve party line-up. But here’s what we know and we will try keep you updated and will include a few ‘ones to watch’.

Berghain (& Panorama Bar): Still considered the “best club in the world”, this is authentic Berlin, partying like there’s no tomorrow in a sweaty hedonistic mass that somehow fills an entire warehouse. For some well-earned time out from the techno throng and unsurpassed sound system you can head up to the stylish Panorama bar for more top acts. The stern-faced door staff are best pleased with quiet and well behaved queuers.

Salon Berlin

Ritter ButzkeWith its vividly decorated wall, coloured lights and grand decor (plenty of chandeliers here, you classy folks) this is definitely one of the cooler places to party in Berlin. More genuinely underground than other venues and it’s known for hitting the electro nail on the head with a few live acts thrown into the equation. There are three rooms in this converted factory, all with witty names. Drinks are cheap, the crowd is chilled, though the door policy a tad unpredictable – thankfully, for NYE you’ll have no problem with advance tickets. The parties go on for so long there is even a coffee bar.

Watergate, Berlin

Watergate: The club offers great views of the river Spree both inside (from the panorama windows) and out on the terrace – perfect for spotting stray fireworks! Spread across two floors the club can accommodate two separate acts at any one time and the LED ceiling running the full length of the club glows for a slick effect.

Salon Berlin

Salon- zur wilden RenateThis club goes all out for whatever crazy themed night they’ve cooked up, so you can loose and entire weekend Friday to Sunday pottering about this two-storey abandoned house complete with ping pong table.

Horst KrzbrgYou can’t go far wrong here. Horst Krzbrg is run by Restrealitaet, one of the most established party communities in Berlin. Everything in Berlin seems to be housed in some ‘former’ something-or-other and Horst Krzbrg is no different claiming to have spent its early days as a humble post office. Oh, and the beer is pretty cheap too.

Tempelhofer Ufer 1, Kreuzberg Transport: U1 or U6 Hallesches Tor | NYE event tbc

Lido Berlin

Lido: If you prefer your music guitar-driven rather than a mess of electronic bleeps, then head on over to Lido. This former 1950’s cinema has been championing guitar music for over a decade, putting on live bands and indie-rock DJs throughout the week. Expect them to pull out all the stops for NYE.
