The recent rainfall around Hostelbookers HQ got us thinking about water in a big way whilst wishing we were somewhere else! And that got us talking about the worlds best waterfalls…
Named after the American James Angel who "discovered" the falls in 1933, Angel Falls is the worlds highest at 979m. The falls are surrounded by the dense jungle of the Camaima National Park, and getting to see them can turn into something of an effort, given their remoteness and unpredictable weather.
Arguably the most spectacular in the world, Victoria Falls border roll out of the Zambezi river. Being the largest single sheet of water in the world (128m high and 1.7km wide!) UNESCO wasted no time in naming these falls a World Heritage Site.
The Iguazu Falls system is made up of around 270 falls stretching 2.7kms, each individually named, such as the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat). With nearby towns in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay Iguazu Falls are a great place to spend a few days lapping up the sights.
Slightly off the beaten track, these falls in north eastern Iceland have the claim of the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Depending on the summer ice melt and the season, up to 500 cubic meters can flow through these fall each second!
No list of great waterfalls would be complete without the mighty Niagara Falls. Comprised of three separate waterfalls, whilst Niagara is renown for it's beauty it's also home to a hydroelectric power system slightly upstream from the falls. If you're anywhere in the vicinity, Niagara is a must!
