Witching hour at the Guimar Carnival

Witching hour at the Guimar CarnivalBackpackers enjoying a hostel-staying trip to the Canary Islands will be able to take advantage of a unique experience at the Guimar Carnival in Tenerife.

Marking today's (27th February 2009) culmination of the festival, travelers will find an unusual performance taking place in the Plaza de San Pedro.

Amid the feasting and music and dancing there will be a performance of the street-theatre show Las Burras de Guimar, which translates to read The Donkeys of Guimar.

The outlandish tale brings to life the popular legend that witches turn into donkeys at night.

Similar in some ways to Halloween, the atmosphere at the event is one of light-hearted spooky fun.

Continuing the mystical theme after the carnival, travelers can head for the intriguing Pyramids of Guimar.

Little is known about these distinct structures except that they were built in the 19th century.

There has been much speculation as to the purpose and function of the pyramids, with archaeological excavations and research projects attempting to solve the riddle.
