Sydney art on a shoestring

Art lovers planning a backpacking trip to Sydney can be forgiven for experiencing a sense of trepidation at the thought of spending lots of money on art galleries and museums.

Advice on how to get out of the hostel and into an art gallery without denting the wallet is at hand, however, in the form of Time Out Sydney reporter Sarah Norris' guide to "gratis art".

Her suggestions include seeking out art previews and opening nights where up-and-coming talents rub shoulders with the great and the good while sipping free wine and munching on snacks.

Another free venue is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which offers backpackers a chance to glimpse the work of international artists such as the sculptor Yinka Shonibare's alongside Australian works.

Yinka Shonibare grew up in London and Nigeria and was nominated for the Turner prize in 2004. He uses bright fabrics inspired by Africa in his work.

Ms Norris' also advises backpackers to visit exhibits during unsocial hours as they may be free, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales which does not charge admittance on Wednesday evenings.
