Student travel to benefit from extended hours of New York museum

Student travel to New York is to be boosted by the launch of a program of extended opening hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

The Met Holiday Mondays will see the museum open on six Mondays that fall on major holiday weekends, when the cultural institution would normally have been closed to the public.

Travelers can venture from their hostels to view the museum's many exhibits that currently include a centenary retrospective of Francis Bacon and Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul.

Emily Rafferty, president of the Metropolitan Museum, commented: "In difficult economic times such as these, when it is good to remind ourselves of the uplifting and spiritually restorative powers of art, we are pleased to be able to offer Met Holiday Mondays - one of our very popular programs - for another year."

She added that the initiative has proved immensely popular since it was established in 2003 with some 400,000 people coming to view the works of art that are exhibited.
