Student travel stop-off at Lake Champlain

Hostel-staying travelers in New York looking for a diversion to keep them entertained tomorrow (11th August 2009), may wish to head to Plattsburgh.

It is there that the historic canal vessel named Day Peckinpaugh will make its way along the Lake Champlain and Hudson Corridor.

Constructed in 1921, the canal boat will embark on a 500-mile Quadricentennial Legacy Voyage to celebrate 400 years of maritime exploration.

From 11th August 2009 until 12th August 2009 the ship will be at the Wilcox Dock, before arriving at Burlington waterfront on August 12th 2009 and remaining there until 16th August 2009.

Travelers are invited to venture on to the ship while it docks and marvel at the wealth of history onboard.

According to Waterford Maritime, Day Peckinpaugh is a pioneering motorship built to transport bulk cargo between New York and the Midwest.

Erie Canalway, executive director Beth Sciumeca, commented: "This is an exceptional opportunity for people to explore these remarkable vessels-each offering a unique window into the traditions and heritage of Lake Champlain, New York's canals, and the Hudson River."
