St John's Bonfires festival now on in Alicante

St John's Bonfires festival now on in AlicanteTravelers in Spain may wish to book their hostels in Alicante for an extra day so they can join in the fun at the annual St John's Bonfires.

Taking place on 24th June 2009 as the clock strikes midnight, the midsummer extravaganza sees local people heading to the beach against a backdrop of flames.

As the bonfires burn, fireworks will light up the sky at St Barbara Castle, watched by crowds of locals as well as people who have traveled from outside town.

On the pyres will be thrown the hogueras or fogueres, which are people-shaped papier-mache figures often built to resemble political figures or other high-profile celebrities the local people wish to satirize.

The midsummer madness is accompanied by events and festivities including bullfighting.

Those travelers seeking respite from the smoke and the flickering flames can explore the Archaeological Museum and the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts to add a cultural dimension to their trip.
