Rome authorities 'take action over tourism rip-offs'
Those planning a backpacking break in Rome may be interested to learn that authorities in the city have vowed to clamp down on those who over-charge tourists for food and drink, it has been reported.
According to the Times, a campaign has been launched in a bid to improve the Italian capital's reputation.
"The tumbling pound has made Rome's 18 [£16] glasses of beer, 25 aperitifs and 9 ice creams hurt more than ever," the publication noted.
Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno said those who rip off travelers should be made to feel ashamed by the rest of the city's residents.
Meanwhile, a study published last week by PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that Brits are becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to booking backpacking flights and accommodation.
The study found that more travelers are waiting for special offers and deals before arranging their trips.
