Parents 'planning gap year breaks'

An increasing number of parents are opting to "hijack" their children's gap year trips, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Telegraph, Liz Hunt suggested that some adults are making up for their lack of travel by joining their offspring and gate-crashing parts of their itineraries.

"They may be of a generation that had no choice but to go straight to university from school or find a job because of lack of funds. Or perhaps their own post-school trip lacked ambition," she commented.

Ms Hunt suggested that 21st century gappers expect high-octane adventure and their disgruntled parents are often eager to get in on the action.

A recent study revealed that an increasing number of people are choosing to take backpacking trips as a result of the economic downturn.

Research published by InsureandGo earlier this month found that 3.3 million Britons have recently traveled abroad or plan to do so in the future.
