Olympics 'will increase backpacking trips to Brazil'

Many more people will opt to include Brazil in their backpacking holidays after Rio de Janeiro was named as the host city for the 2016 Olympics, it has been suggested.

Laura Rendell-Dunn of Journey Latin America said the country is likely to welcome more international visitors in the wake of the decision, which will bring the Olympics to South America for the first time.

She also claimed that people traveling to Rio for the event will be inspired to extend their stay and fully explore "one of the most beautiful cities in the world".

"Anyone visiting the Games will like to spend the rest of their time in Brazil and visit the beautiful beaches, waterfalls and jungles it has to offer," Ms Rendell-Dunn explained.

She said that backpackers visiting the country during the Olympics could "bolt on another week to visit some of Brazil's gems".

Figures from the Brazilian tourist board show that approximately 181,000 British people traveled to the country last year, up from 177,000 in 2007.
