Muslim Voices Festival in New York
Hostel-staying travelers in New York may wish to attend one of the performing arts spectacles being held during the Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas festival.
Taking place from 5 June 2009 until 14 June 2009, the ten-day extravaganza will introduce to audiences the cultural legacy of the Muslim world.
Senegalese artist Youssou N'Dour opened the festival on Friday with a rousing performance alongside artists from other parts of the Muslim world.
Over 100 acts will participate in the event, which will encompass exhibitions, talks and screenings.
Traditional Islamic arts such as calligraphy, sufi devotional chanting and storytelling will also be celebrated at a range of venues across New York.
The contemporary face of Islam is also set to be conveyed with Arab hip hop artists and filmmakers also taking to the stage.
To coincide with the festival, the Empire State Building, which for four decades was the world's tallest building, will be bathed in green light.
Green has long been associated with the Muslim religion for a variety of reasons with a passage in the Qur'an describing believers in the garden of paradise dressed in green silk.
