Mozambique 'is Africa's last undiscovered destination'
Mozambique is an attractive destination for backpackers looking to escape the crowds and soak up some culture, it has been suggested.
Mercedes Bailey, Mozambique specialist at To Escape To, said that although the country can be quite costly to get to, it is an extremely attractive destination for adventurous travelers.
"The appeal lies in the fact that it is really Africa's last undiscovered destination.
The civil war only came to end in 1992 and even after that the country was inaccessible except to the most hardy of travelers because of the lack of infrastructure and land mines," she commented.
Ms Bailey noted that the country has opened up in recent years and boasts 2,500 km of spectacular coastline that offers some of the best scuba diving in the world.
The country is also rich in culture and travelers can find out about its turbulent past by visiting places such as Ilha de Mozambique.
According to the Canal de Mozambique newspaper, tourist authorities in the country are hoping to attract some of the football fans visiting South Africa for next year's World Cup tournament.
