Manchester named airport of the year

Manchester Airport has scooped one of the most prestigious prizes at this year's Travel Trade Gazette Awards.

The north-west transport hub was presented with the airport of the year trophy at the ceremony held in London this week, beating off stiff competition from London Luton, Birmingham and Southampton.

Andrew Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airport, said the award is testament to the hard work carried out by employees there.

"[It] recognises everyone's commitment to creating an unrivalled experience for our passengers across every aspect of their journey through the airport," he added.

Airport authorities at Manchester recently spent £80 million on redeveloping two of its terminals.

Meanwhile, those planning backpacking trips may be interested to learn that Birmingham Airport was recently awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of the efforts made to improve environmental efficiency there.
