Excess baggage savings with Czech airlines could ease cost of gap year travel

Czech Airlines has announced that travelers will be able to pre-pay any excess baggage online, which may be good news for hostel-staying backpackers.

Logging on to the airline's website in advance to pay for luggage beyond the amount allowed can offer savings of a third compared with the financial penalty incurred for being over the limit at check-in.

The Czech national carrier, which flies to 69 destinations in 41 countries, has also announced that it will be offering a pooling option, which will enable passengers flying together to combine their baggage allowance.

Petr Pistelak, Czech Airlines vice-president for marketing and product development, commented: "Only one of the two passengers needs to pre-pay the lowest weight band required and then they can distribute the excess weight among their bags as they need.

"After travel insurance, paying for an excess baggage allowance over the internet is another service that increases user comfort and brings savings to Czech Airlines passengers."

He added that the airline intends to include further facilities to ensure the service is convenient for passengers.
