Eurovision in Moscow
The Eurovision Song Contest takes place this weekend (16 May 2009) and travelers who happen to be in Moscow, which is hosting the tongue-in-cheek extravaganza, may wish to join in the fun.
Backpackers can venture outside and find a bar showing the kitsch contest or team up with fellow travelers to watch it at a hostel.
A Eurovision Song Contest party may be a great way to spend the evening as the Russian capital prepares to welcome a host of singers and dancers from at least 42 countries in Europe and even beyond.
The format of the live televised competition has remained largely unchanged since it first started in 1956, although since 1997 a greater number of participating countries have asked members of the public to vote for their favorite song.
Highlights at this year's event, which will be missing veteran host Terry Wogan, will include a Palestinian-Israeli duo and what is being touted as the best UK entry in a long time, a number sung by Jade Ewen.
