East Midlands operations to cease, easyJet advises backpacking travelers

People preparing to go backpacking in the near future may be interested to hear that easyJet is planning to close down its East Midlands Airport operations.

The company explained that it will also reduce its flying programme at Luton Airport by 20 per cent.

According to the carrier, costs at Luton have increased by around 25 per cent over the course of the last three years, meaning that it is no longer competitive.

Meanwhile, easyJet's base at East Midlands Airport was described by the firm as "stagnant" and so the firm is now focusing on other priorities.

Commenting, Andy Harrison, chief executive of easyJet, said: "We cannot see a growing long term future and we have decided to move our assets to markets with better long-term potential."

In recent days, the airline announced a number of low-cost flights to people stranded as a result of SkyEurope halting its operations.
