Convoy system ends in Egypt

Convoy system ends in EgyptEgypt's convoy system has been brought to an end, meaning visitors can travel more freely between their hostels.

The system, which had been in place for 11 years, required police-escorted convoys to accompany buses and coaches carrying tourists between cities.

This was due to concerns about threats to security by terrorists but ending up restricting when visitors could travel as well as the choice of their destinations, Travel Weekly reports.

However, there will now be no convoys during daylight hours, but they are still required between 18:00 and 6:00.

Philip Breckner, commercial director of Discover Egypt, told the travel magazine that tourists can now travel more conveniently between Luxor and the Red Sea.

"It will also allow for travel between Luxor and Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib, which until now has not been practical," he added.

"This is a great bonus for those choosing to travel and holiday in Egypt."
