Backpacking with the bats

Hostel-staying travelers enjoying a gap year experience may be able to indulge a love of nature while backpacking in Europe.

At the end of August (29th August 2009 until 30th August 2009) European Bat Night, which is organized by Eurobats, will take place across the continent bringing together bat-lovers to observe and record sightings of the fascinating creatures.

Those travelers in the UK will be able to enjoy an array of bat-related events and activities coordinated by the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT).

Julia Hanmer, deputy chief executive of the BCT, commented: "Bats are indicators of biodiversity so to have them in your local area is a sign of a healthy, green environment. However, largely due to the destruction of habitats and the loss of roosts, they are under threat in the UK.

"European Bat Weekend is an ideal way for people to learn more about the problems facing bats, and to find out how they can help with these truly amazing creatures."
