Backpacking with Eurostar comes out top

Travelers making their way across Europe may be interested to learn that Eurostar has been named the UK's top train brand.

Hostel-staying backpackers could be tempted to embark upon an inter-railing trip through Europe or beyond in light of the news.

The rail operator came out top in a survey by the Centre for Brand Analysis, which examines the quality, reliability and distinction of rail companies.

Simon Montague, Eurostar's director of communications, commented: "We're delighted that consumers recognize Eurostar as the UK's premier train brand.

"It is recognition of the consistently high standards of value, punctuality and service we provide to business and leisure travelers alike, making journeys quicker, simpler and easier."

Proposals for a Channel tunnel had been mooted as far back as 1802 but it wasn't until 1974 that building between England and France began, although the project was eventually abandoned for financial reasons.

It was resumed in the 1980s and Eurostar was launched in 1994 with services to Paris and Brussels out of Waterloo, London, which in 2007 were transferred to operate out of St Pancras International.
