Backpacking to the Notting Hill Carnival

The sounds and sights of the Caribbean will bring the streets of Notting Hill to life in less than two weeks.

Taking place over the August bank holiday weekend (30th August 2009 until 31st August 2009), the Notting Hill Carnival is a popular event, so travelers would do well to book their London hostels in advance.

A street festival celebrating music, costume and dance inspired by the culture of the West Indies, the Notting Hill Carnival has been a fixture in the British outdoor summer scene since 1965.

Children's Day takes place on Sunday and has a family flavor with youngsters dressed in colorful attire as they travel on floats and in procession along the carnival route.

Traditional soca and calypso music can be heard alongside contemporary reggae, soul, dance, hip hop and R n B on both days as sound systems compete for dominance.

Transport for London recommends that those intending to travel to the festival on public transport ensure they are aware of any planned engineering works occurring on the tube network.
