Backpacking to celebrate International Year of Astronomy at Exmoor National Park

Travelers in the UK looking for outdoor entertainment during those long, and hopefully warm, summer evenings can choose from an array of events.

Exmoor National Park, which is located in Devon and Somerset, is one destination that may be enjoyed by hostel-staying backpackers seeking cultural stimulation under the stars.

In an effort to mark the International Year of Astronomy, the park has organised a series of free events, which have so far included an opportunity to view the movements of the planet Saturn.

An Astro Camp Out hosted by a local astronomer will take place on 25th July 2009, providing an insight into the mysterious constellations that light up the night sky.

Later on in the year, on 12th August 2009, star-gazers will be invited to observe meteors.

Meteors, which are particles of solar system debris passing through the earth's atmosphere, often leave a visible streak of light, lending them the label shooting stars.

An astronomy presentation will also take place in the evening at a local pub should the weather takes a turn for the worst.
