Backpacking in New York on a budget

Hostel-staying travelers making their way to New York will be able to take advantage of an initiative to encourage more people to spend time in the Big Apple.

The I Love New York promotion is being organised to mark the 400th Anniversary of Historic Hudson-Champlain Sailings.

Henry Hudson famously explored the Hudson River, which was eventually named after him, while Samuel de Champlain made the discovery of the lake.

The promotion kicked off yesterday (27th August 2009) and will continue to offer discounts and savings on activities and attractions within New York until the offer closes on 23rd November 2009.

Dennis Mullen, chairman and chief executive of Empire State Development, commented: "One simple phrase 'I Love New York' has become a part of our state's identity and has come to represent world-wide affection for New York.

"The [travel] industry has helped rebuild the state's economy through difficult times and remains a vital economic engine for New York State."

Backpackers who find themselves in New York may also wish to make sure they catch the major attractions of the city such as the Empire State Building and Central Park.
