Backpacking in Berlin's squats

Backpackers in Berlin may be interested to learn that there is a thriving cultural scene in the squats and vacant buildings that are scattered throughout the city.

Offering food, entertainment and a great opportunity to discover the vibrant underbelly of the dynamic city, travelers would do well to emerge from their hostels and sample squat culture, reports the Guardian.

Decorated with posters and colors, squats are easy to identify and although some may seem uninviting, they are usually a hub of young people.

Often resembling a student union cafe, the venues attract an "eclectic" crowd, according to the newspaper: "Intellectual-looking students, Australian backpackers, a few punks, hippyish couples, crusties playing table football."

Travelers who are willing to experience mainstream culture alongside underground sub-cultures may wish to view some of the city's 153 museums.

Museum Island in the German capital is a popular stop-off for travelers, as is the Painting Gallery and Jewish Museum.
