Alaska celebrates 50 years of statehood with a music extravaganza
Throughout May a whole host of activities will come together to form Spotlight on 50th: Juneau Jazz & Classics, all promising to keep hostel-staying travelers in Alaska entertained.
This month's musical extravaganza is a continuation of celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Alaska's transition into statehood, which took place in 1959.
Before becoming the 49th state of the United States, Alaska was part of the Russian empire until it was acquired by the US senate for $7.2 million (£4.8 million).
Part of the 23rd annual Juneau Jazz & Classics, the Opus 50 music season will comprise of blues boat cruises, workshops and live music at a variety of venues.
The event will begin on 15 May 2009 and will feature an eclectic musical line-up to suit all tastes.
Acts ranging from classical music, jazz and the blues will be performed throughout the ten-day program.
Backpackers looking for some respite from the festivities may wish to venture to the University of Alaska Museum of the North in Fairbanks.
The museum's latest exhibit, The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World, is a stark reminder to travelers of the fragile beauty of the state.
