Avid skiers will soon be able to enjoy the piste of California's Kirkwood Mountain safe in the knowledge that they are also being environmentally friendly.
The Kirkwood Mountain Resort has announced that it is to install 20 wind turbines to improve the carbon footprint at the resort's
ski accommodation.
Each turbine is capable of producing an estimated 6,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per day.
Authorities expect the turbines to be up and running as early as 2010, providing for around 20 per cent of its energy needs during the peak season.
However Dave Linkins, Kirkwood CEO, claims that the savings over the year amount to much more.
He said: "This would allow us to eliminate fossil fuel generation for all but four months a year.
"We could go almost eight months carbon-free as a resort community with 600 to 700 residents."
During the last winter season, the Kirkwood Mountain Resort partnered with SnowBomb to deliver an eco-friendly ride-sharing program.
