Backpacking tourists keen on sampling snails while on holiday in France may soon be hit by a price increase.
Snails are one of France's most renowned delicacies, with a plate of L'escargot no doubt one of the must-tries that top the most adventurous backpacker's itinerary.
But those excited about the prospect of sampling snail in a budget Parisian bistro now face the prospect of higher prices after snail-pickers wages were increased.
France's snail industry now relies heavily on foreign imports from countries such as Poland and Bulgaria.
However, economic growth is thought to have led to increased wage demands by the workers charged with collecting them from fields.
According to the Dederation des Industries d'Ailments Conseves, around 700 million snails are consumed in France each year.
France is also responsible for two thirds of the world's total snail consumption.
