Plans to link up seven countries in East Africa with a new railway system have been unveiled at the East African Community (EAC) investment summit in Rwanda.
While
gap year travel around the continent has always been popular, a lack of infrastructure means that travel between places can be complicated or expensive.
However, proposals to build 15 new railway lines could be set to reform travel and trade routes around the African region, reports Business Daily.
In his last budget speech, Kenyan finance minister Amos Kimunya, underlined the need for investment in rail infrastructure.
He said: "We will need to make significant investment in the expansion and modernisation of our railway infrastructure.
"This will be an investment in a standard gauge railway network linking Kenya and its neighbours."
Kenya recently improved its international tourism routes too, after it penned a deal with the US as part of the Open Skies agreement.
According to figures from the Kenya Tourist Board, there was a 17 per cent increase in the number of US tourist arrivals into the country in 2007.
