Parents taking their children on holiday this summer should try and "be vigilant" at all times, according to one expert.
Families staying in
hostels abroad are at particular risk because of minor differences that children may take for granted at home, reports the Mirror
Recent research by travel firm Tots for Travel found that more than two in five parents feel more safety conscious when on holiday with children than when at home.
It is advised that children are not left on balconies unattended, while parents have also been urged to inform their child that the traffic travels in a different direction in some foreign countries.
David Walker, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, told the newspaper: "Problems often happen on the first or last days of the holiday when parents are busy checking in and out, so be vigilant."
Language barriers may also be a problem if children get lost, further highlighting the need for parents to remain vigilant.
